![]() ![]() According to psychologists, possible explanations for why people believe in modern apocalyptic predictions include mentally reducing the actual danger in the world to a single and definable source, an innate human fascination with fear, personality traits of paranoia and powerlessness and a modern romanticism involved with end-times due to its portrayal in contemporary fiction. Historically, it has been done for reasons such as diverting attention from actual crises like poverty and war, pushing political agendas, and promoting hatred of certain groups antisemitism was a popular theme of Christian apocalyptic predictions in medieval times, while French and Lutheran depictions of the apocalypse were known to feature English and Catholic antagonists respectively. Little research has been done into why people make apocalyptic predictions. While these disasters are generally accepted within the scientific community as plausible "end of the world" scenarios, the events and phenomena are not expected to occur for hundreds of thousands or even billions of years from now. Predictions of the end from natural events have also been theorised by various scientists and scientific groups. This often takes the form of mathematical calculations, such as trying to calculate the point where it will have been 6000 years since the supposed creation of the Earth by the Abrahamic God, which according to the Talmud marks the deadline for the Messiah to appear. Many religious-related end-time events are predicted to occur within the lifetime of the person making the prediction, who often quote the Bible, and in particular the New Testament, as either the primary or exclusive source for the predictions. Christian predictions typically refer to events like the rapture, the Great Tribulation, the Last Judgment, and the Second Coming of Christ. Most predictions are related to Abrahamic religions, often standing for or similar to the eschatological events described in their scriptures. Predictions of apocalyptic events that would result in the extinction of humanity, a collapse of civilization, or the destruction of the planet have been made since at least the beginning of the Common Era. In Christian belief, the Last Judgement is an apocalyptic event where God makes a final judgement of all people on Earth. The Last Judgment by painter Hans Memling.

![]() The game should let us be stupid so we can learn from those mistakes.Īs far as the players - As most know Johnny Bench was the 1975 Reds catcher. And particularly frustrating was the "computer override" of a steal command where the runner would take off for second only to stop on a dime and return to first, presumably because he was going to be thrown out because I made a dumb decision - a way to balance the statistical validity of the game's outcome. There was the odd really bad decision by baserunners attempting to advance even though the fielder already had the ball when they hit the previous base. I saw several instances of outfielders disappearing into the outfield fence while baserunners ran unimpeded around the bases. Not so great was the clunky game play - the skating fielders, the wonky foul pops that look more like warped reflections of baseball in a funhouse mirror, and the curious tendency for players to hold on to the ball too long while baserunners catch up with what obviously is a pre-determined outcome. I'm also curious to build my own stadium and team in some of the other game modes I look forward to exploring. My goal here is to offer the development team a reasonable, honest debrief on their product, because this game *could* become something truly special.īack on the "this is awesome" side, I loved that I could download entire sets of reconstructed, historically accurate stadiums, uniforms, including the first version of the Astros "Tequila Sunrise" uniforms, which I still love and wish they had the nerve to wear again. It seemed like a really good idea at the time, and the modest price point was very easy for a game of this quality. I picked it up when the real MLB season hit the skids because of COVID as a way to get my daily baseball fix while the season was on hold. ![]() This is meant to be useful feedback because I actually really like this game. So perhaps the statistical modeling supporting the accuracy of these historical reproductions could be beefed up.Īnd I do not say that sarcastically or lightly. ![]() This season presented layer upon layer of hilariously improbable outcomes. 500, their OOTP counterpart managed to beat a team who swept a team with 115 wins. So even though the real-world counterpart of the OOTP 1975 World Champions was a fourth place team who finished 5 games under. Even more hilariously the Phillies who swept a team that finished one game off the Major League Record of 116 wins in a season lost the series 4 games to 1 to the Twins. But, in the OOTP world - The Dodgers were incredibly swept by the Phillies in the NLCS while the Twins (TWINS? REALLY?) took the full 5 to disappoint George Steinbrenner and the Yankees. The MLB 75 Red Sox beat Oakland in the ALCS. If I simulated a statistically accurate 1975 Dodgers Season 1,000 times I doubt I'd ever see the results this season of OOTP produced for a team that should have won 27 fewer games.Įven worse - The 75 MLB Reds defeated the Pirates in the NLCS in 1975. The MLB Dodgers in 1975 won 88 games finishing a full 20 games behind the Reds that year. Even though the OOTP Reds finished 2 full games ahead of the 1975 MLB Reds, *absurdly* they finished in 2nd place 5 games behind the OOTP 75 Dodgers who had a ridiculously improbable 115 wins. I even kept score in a scorebook, and even worse - still have that scorebook. I had hoped to duplicate my experience with the MicroLeague 1975 World Series way back in those youthful 8-bit days where the Reds and Red Sox played the full 7 games with the Reds taking the Championship in the 7th game at Boston, just like the real thing. But that is where the accuracy falls completely off a cliff. But that's minor.Īfter completing the 1975 season my Cincinnati Reds finished with a record of 110 and 52, remarkably close to the actual Cincinnati Reds who finished their World Championship season with a record of 108 and 54. OOTP compares somewhat favorably, most notably in the visuals department with the stadiums, the customization capacity, and uniforms. I rigged up an Atari emulator on my MacBook Pro and had some fun playing the old game before I discovered OOTP as a possible coping tool for the COVID world. I'm a veteran of the MicroLeague baseball games on the Atari 800XL platform from the '80s. I just finished playing a full 162 game historical season managing the Cincinnati Reds. We developed FlowKit to bridge the gap between manual and automated workflows. However, there are also severe limitations to a purely manual workflow for data analysis, especially the poor scalability to high-volume workflows and limitations of visual discovery for high-dimensional data sets. For example, domain experts are typically better at removing debris, dead cells, and cell aggregates by gating than automated approaches. ![]() There are good reasons for this - traditional software such as FlowJo excels at the visual manipulation and analysis of data, and human analysis is inherently more adaptable than any fully automated workflow. ![]() We present examples of the use of FlowKit for constructing reporting and analysis workflows, including round-tripping results to and from FlowJo for joint analysis by both domain and quantitative experts.ĭespite the phenomenal advances in Single Cell Data Science (SCDS) methodology and an ever-growing collection of algorithms and open-source packages, it is an open secret that the day-to-day analysis of cytometric data in flow laboratories and core facilities is still predominantly performed using traditional software, especially FlowJo. To address this challenge, we developed FlowKit, a Gating-ML 2.0-compliant Python package that can read and write FCS files and FlowJo workspaces. To a large extent, this cuts domain experts off from the rapidly growing library of Single Cell Data Science algorithms available, curtailing the potential contributions of these experts to the validation and interpretation of results. Domain experts in cytometry laboratories and core facilities increasingly recognize the need for automated workflows in the face of increasing data complexity, but by and large, still conduct all analysis using traditional applications, predominantly FlowJo.
